How to Leverage Collaborative Intelligence to Achieve Transformative Outcomes 



My recent blog described how to get started immediately on building visions, strategies, skills, and partnerships for not just Artificial Intelligence but for Collaborative Intelligence (CI), the fusing of human and machine intelligence into a new form of continuously evolving cognition. 


Building a Body of Knowledge in the Use of CI 


Over the next few years, several developments will occur in parallel that will empower institutional leaders to develop CI capacity. They will begin to demonstrate and leverage CI's capacity to add value and achieve transformative outcomes. 


  • The accelerating deployment of current-gen AI and the early stages of CI will provide real use cases that will guide higher education and provide a clear vision of the potential in the 5—to 10-year future. New collaborators and competitors from outside higher education will move quickly to demonstrate new models and take CI to scale.

  • Leading institutions will build and acquire skills and insights in AI, including talent and collaborations from outside higher education. Such institutions will engage hundreds of their faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders in pilot projects that improve learner outcomes and enable practitioners to acquire skills and change their perspectives/mindsets. They will also discover the potential of CI to help them reskill and be successful in the future.  

  • Over time, growing numbers of insightful faculty and staff will embrace CI's potential. Through hires and shrewd development, well-led institutions will develop and acquire a critical mass of the leadership needed to succeed in the Age of Collaborative Intelligence.  

  • As institutions improve their strategic planning and change processes, they will build the capacity to confront the challenges and reach out for the opportunities provided by the CI future. A new breed of leadership will emerge to lead a more aggressive, strategic approach to change in higher education, focusing on new opportunities. Boards will need to take an active role in supporting this kind of leadership.

Institutional Actions in the Three- to Five-Year Future 


These developments in the next few years will open the way to accelerating CI deployment and the arrival of new collaborators and competitors. Institutional leaders should: 


  • Progressively identify new skills, processes, and practices needed for the CI future, then reshape them for that purpose.   

  • Invest in new technology infrastructure to support AI/CI-intensive experiences.   

  • Accelerate, expand, and transform strategy crafting, change management, and decision-making. CI will participate in every conversation, decision, and learning experience.  

  • Focus AI/CI projects on adaptive and responsive teaching methods, personalized learning, AI literacies, and talent development of faculty, staff, and students. Strategically scale successful AI/CI projects. This includes reaching out to larger opportunities in serving the upskilling and perpetual learning needs of knowledge workers over careers spanning 60 years or more.

  • Collaborate, collaborate, and collaborate some more. Partner with and learn from leaders who are deploying transformative AI/CI. Join consortia that facilitate sharing and deploying insights on what works in leveraging CI. Be open to new channels for engaging learning at all stages of their learning careers.

  • Accelerate, expand, and transform strategy crafting, change management, and decision-making. CI will be a personalized agent, participating in every conversation, decision, and learning activity.
